RC2 not allowing my own comments

Reported by: me@igeek.info Assigned to: kitten (accepted)

Description

I'm using RC2 on v1.2 with the STRIKES set to 3. Spaminator seems to be blocking my own comments just because they are a bit long, around 100 words or so, but they don't contain any links or blacklisted words(as far as I know, just plain english). I've to post an alphabet & then edit that comment from the admin panel to make it appear. Can you tell me what's wrong? The blacklist I'm using is at http://blog.igeek.info/my_blacklist.txt

  • priority changed from high to low.
  • status changed from new to assigned.
  • severity changed from major to minor.

Try editing you blacklist some. I noticed that you have some very short words and on one with a space in it. All those could be causing problems. You also might want to up the allowed strikes to 4 or 5. It's set at 5 in later versions because of the stricter checking.

Also, you can move up to rc3 w/o upgrading your blog. One thing that you'd gain is being able to see how comments are being evaluated by the status messages attached.

One more thing, post a comment that you know will get blocked, then "veiw source" on the Spaminator error page, and you'll be able to see why you were blocked. But my guess is that your word list is causing your problems.

Also, follow the advise above and report back what you find. When you find the root of the problem, please close this bug.

Its me again. One thing that came up in my mind after reading your reply is that, does Spaminator show an error page when it rejects(delete) a comment? B'coz I didn't see any error page, but the blog did get slowed down(maybe b'coz of the sleep feature). Also, doesn't versions after RC3 work on WP1.2? I plan to upgrade to WP1.5 as soon as I get time but for the time being, will the latest RC(7 as I see it) work with WP1.2? I understand that I won't have access to the admin page etc. but I can live without it as long as Spaminator does its main job, that of killing SPAM(not legit comments).

Read the change log:

Respectively:

  • Yes - wait for it
  • No - See the changelog
  • No - See the changelog

This is not a major issue, it's a problem with your configuration. Mainly that your word list it overly broad and mis-formatted.

I had a similar issue. I managed to defeat it by turning off Spaminator and making and approving a comment since one of the 'strikes' appeared to be having no previous approved comment. I'm currently running with 3 strikes (because I had poker and viagra things getting through at 5) and legitimate comments seem to be having no problems.

Well, turning off & turning on the Spaminator each time you post can be a bit of nuisance. I'd prefer a more robust solution.

Amit, once you have an approved comment from an email address, you're on the whitelist, so you get to start out w/ 3 bonus points, so you're less likely to have your own comments killed in the future. If the make it past spaminator, and still get moderated, then it's a spam words list. And that's something you'll have to clean up yourself. As I said above, your words list is a mess.
